The Charm of Springfield, OR

In 1848, the "Southern Route" brought Elias and Mary Briggs to what is now the Springfield area. Elias and Mary set up their homestead adjacent to a naturally occurring spring - and the name "Springfield" was born.

Elias Briggs operated a ferry across the Willamette River. Currently, the Union Pacific railroad bridge runs across the path that Briggs' ferry originally took. Briggs, along with Mr. Driggs of Linn County, started a flour mill in 1853 and a sawmill in 1854. Known as the Briggs and Driggs Company, Springfield's growth started with these mills.

Springfield: "Proud History, Bright Future"

By the time it was incorporated in 1885, Springfield's commercial district grew to include: two grocery stores, a couple of cigar stores, a drug, dress, butcher, barber, shoe, and a variety store.

Currently, Springfield is home to about 59,403 people (2010 census) and is the second-most populated city in the metropolitan area behind Eugene.

Since its beginning, Springfield was dependent on local resources to support its economy, primarily lumber and crops. However, in 1990, the city diversified its economy and now PeaceHealth is the largest employer, followed by the Springfield School District and Symantec (software firm).
